Carbon Emissions Information
What Is A Carbon Footprint?
A carbon footprint is best described as the total set of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions caused by an organization, activity, event, product…or tank of fuel. What is greenhouse gas? These are gases in the atmosphere that absorb and emit radiation within the thermal infrared range. Greenhouse gases greatly affect the temperature of the Earth, which is why it is important to strive for carbon nuetrality.
What is a Carbon Offset?
A carbon offset is measured in metric tons of carbon dioxide-equivalent (CO2e). One carbon offset represents the reduction of one metric ton of carbon dioxide or its equivalent in other greenhouse gases. A carbon offset is a financial instrument directed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. When you purchase a carbon offset, you are fuding environmental reclamation & improvement programs and projects.
What is My Vessel’s Carbon Footprint?
To calculate the emissions from your fuel consumption, multiply the total gallons of fuel your tanks hold, by the appropriate lbs of CO2 (based on fuel type) per gallon. This figure equals the number of pounds of carbon dioxide your vessel puts out when you’ve burned full tanks to empty. The resulting number might seem high – a typical boat puts out many times its own weight in carbon dioxide… when fuel burns, it combines with oxygen in the air and becomes much heavier.
