Practical Environmentalist is a blog website dedicated to helping people keep up to date with the latest ideas to live green and environmentally friendly. The blog articles are written by Ken Swanson and Lars Hundley. Ken was educated as a Community and Regional Planner and is now a freelance environmental writer, and Lars is an online retailer of environmentally friendly gardening products. The two started the blog with the belief that individuals can make a difference in improving the environment.

The site is laid out in an easy to navigate blog format where readers can read everything or focus in on topics of interest. The home page is a list of recent blog articles and the site has two other pages, one titled “21 Practical Ways to Help the Environment” and an “Environmental Resources” links page.
The blog articles are in depth and informative, covering a wide range of environmental topics and products. New articles are posted on the site at least twice a month. Anyone interested in improving their environmental footprint on the planet can learn something on the site. Checking the blog once a week or so will keep you up to date, or if you lean that way sign up for the RSS feed.
I have a few comments on the technical side of the site. The Pages menu was hard to find, I always go there first to find the About page. The About page should give a background of the sites writers and philosophy. The Practical Environmentalist About page is very informative and gives a positive aspect to the site. I like the tag cloud to find the most discussed subjects. The categories list left me a little cold, I clicked on a couple of personal interest and did not find recent or useful articles. The site seems to have slowed in the amount of new material so more visitors leaving comments may get them motivated. If being a practical environmentalist is important to you, drop them a note.
The “21 Practical Ways to Help the Environment” provides a listing of well know tips like turning down your thermostat and some organic gardening ideas. The page does give excellent background and data on the impact of making these small changes. This website has done a nice job of providing practical advice but I think they can expand with many more ideas their readers could use to help the environment.
