Boat Engine Repair Shops in Mississippi

Whether you’re heading from the Magnolia state to Oakatibee Lake or the Gulf of Mexico, it’s always a good idea to have a reference list of boat engine repair shops in Mississippi, just in case.  But, before looking for boat engine repair shops in Mississippi, here’s a few preventative measures to keep in mind.

Ensure that you always follow the engine maintenance timetable as outlined by your boat engine manufacturer, ensure usage of the correct oil mix, and change your engine oil prior to winter storage.  These tips may help to reduce the need of looking for a boat engine repair shop in Mississippi, or any other state.

But when breakdowns do happen unexpectedly, you may have to seek the services of a boat engine repair shop, no matter what prevention has taken place.  Before agreeing to any potential work being done, ask for a written estimate; this is both for your protection and understanding, as well as that of the boat engine repair shop.  Also, ask fellow boaters about the reputation and professionalism of the boat engine repair shop you’re considering.

When you become a Silver Member on Marinefuel.com, you can use Advanced Searching to filter the E-Marina™ database, and find facilities based on specific amenities, such as boat engine repairs in Mississippi (and the rest of the US & Caribbean).

Beyond marinas, below is a reference list of boat engine repair shops in Mississippi you may want to consider:

How can I know a Yacht from a Feadship?

Even Luxury Cruisers Need Rest

Luxury at Rest

December 28, 2009
By Connie Motz, MarineFuel.com

Established in 1949, the Feadship company is a conglomeration of three Dutch shipbuilding giants: De Voogt, De Vries, and Van Lent.  Over the years, the name ‘feadship’ has become synonymous with first-class exceptionally built yachts.

“There are yachts, and there are Feadships,” states the Feadship website.  With over two hundred Feadships currently cruising world waters, the only way to truly experience the comfort and high quality of a Feadship yacht may be to sail onboard one.

With only five vessels produced each year,
some of the magnificent yachts in the innovative Feadship fleet include:
interior pictures

The Good Life

38’ wooden motor yacht, Refuge, built in 1931

94’ Sultan built in 1939 featured brightly colored opulent fabrics along with gold painted trim

41’ sailing yacht, Dutch Treat, built in 1954

Blackhawk IV, 123’ yacht built in 1971; an entertainment vessel featuring garbage compactors and a pre-microwave radar range; owned by Arthur Wirtz

Al Riyadh, 211’ yacht built in 1978 with room for 26 crew and 24 passengers; owned by Saudi Arabia’s King Khalid

157’ Daria, built in 1979 featured the first satellite communication system on a Feadship; now known as the Wedge One, owned by Matthew Freud (United Kingdom) and Elisabeth Murdoch (Australia)

1995 171’ Battered Bull featured the largest tender onboard a Feadship at 37’; owned by Donald Flynn

the 2008 248’ Ocean Victory, one of the largest Feadship yachts ever built

238’ Predator built in 2009, features a reverse bow

A complete list of the entire Feadship yachting fleet can be found at Wikipedia.

What’s the difference between a yacht and a feadship

Yacht vs. Feadship

“There are charters, and there are Feadship charters,” states the Feadship Charter website, a division of Feadship America.  Feadship Charters provides the utmost in privacy, service, with al fresco dining, an impeccable crew, and your very own itinerary specifically designed for your cruising enjoyment.  The Harle, a 146’ luxury Feadship yacht built in 2007, is available for charter and features expansive windows for viewing pleasure plus an impressive skylight in the master stateroom.  With accommodations for 10 guests, charter rates for the Harle can be obtained by contacting Feadship Charters headquartered in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

Zazu Feadship: Luxury Charter

Zazu Feadship: Luxury Charter

The 1970 Zazu Feadship motor yacht offers accommodations for up to six guests and four crew members.  With its gorgeous art deco interior, this 95’ Florida and Bahamas based yacht is available for charter from Classic-Charters (United Kingdom) at a rate of USD $29,500 per week.  This includes a full crew plus a Yamaha jet ski, snorkel equipment, water skis, wake board, and fishing gear for your personal use.

With the terms yacht and Feadship being synonymous, what is the difference between a yacht and a Feadship?  A yacht is sailing ship of standard quality while a Feadship is a luxurious, high quality, opulent vessel; when someone refers to a yacht as a Feadship, the yacht is sure to possess extraordinary characteristics or it may actually be a Feadship vessel.

The Facts about Gull Outboard Engines

The Facts about Gull Outboard Engines

December 28, 2009
By Connie Motz, MarineFuel.com

Then
Gull Outboard Motor Manufacturing Limited was a Hong Kong based manufacturer, wholesaler, and distributor, of small outboard engines ranging from 1.5 to 3.5 HP.  The Gull Outboard company is no longer in business and so the history of the company remains vague.

Now
The official Gull Outboard engine website is currently not available; the response received is “this webpage is parked free courtesy of GoDaddy.com.”  After conducting a search on Archive.org, the last active page archived was dated July 3, 2008.

Customer Satisfaction
There are six ‘Reviews and Guides’ for Gull Outboard engines listed on eBay Canada; these comments include:

  • “My advice is to stay far away from this product.  These motors are advertised to come with a warranty. When you attempt to make contact with the company regarding warranty service, you will not be able to find anyone to assist you.” – cando1072
  • “engine quit after 5 minutes of use ! Spent  $85 for a check up in a marine store , did the same thing during the 2nd use plus the stop  button is broken now. Spent a lot of time try to fix it, not worth a penny…” – jetmiror
  • “DO NOT BUY ONE – they are rubbish and any guarantee is worthless. Mine has never worked and they refuse to do anything about it. STAY WELL AWAY!” – megaboop
  • “Just Junk – don’t consider buying one – I agree with everything that has been said in the other guides – I wasted my money – don’t waste yours.” – crazylimee
  • “I, too, unfortunately purchased a 2.5 Gull Outboard Motor.  Everything other writers have said is true, but the biggest fool was me.  I should have checked before buying, which I did not do.  The biggest problem was starting the motor…” – 5671william

Makes & Models
Promising “durability, easy maintenance, and reliability at the world’s lowest price,” the latest Gull Outboard engines to be offered in 2008 ranged from 2 to 3.5 HP; they ranged in price from USD $399 to $549 with free global shipping.  The 2 HP Gull Outboard motor was a lightweight engine built for an inflatable or small boat; it featured a compact design with an inside fuel tank, and weighed in at only 20 pounds.  The Gull Outboard 2.5 HP engine offered the same features as the 2 HP model but weighed in at only 18 pounds; the 3.5 HP GULL Outboard engine was “rated best for weight to horsepower ratio.”  It is unclear as to whether Gull Outboard engines may still be purchased directly from the manufacturer in Hong Kong as ‘dealers and distributors wanted worldwide’ advertisements still appear to be live on the internet.

Parts & Manuals
According to the Gull Outboard engine archived website, “if you should ever have a need, Gull Outboards offer all outboard parts at a fraction of the cost of other marine outboard motor manufacturer’s pricing.”  Manuals for Gull Outboard motors are available online through the Internet Archive Wayback Machine.

Why You Need Boat and Yacht Insurance

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009
Why does anyone need boat and yacht insurance?  Because you simply don’t know when an accident will happen.  Your boat was designed to give you a lifetime of enjoyment and in order to protect your investment, you owe it to yourself to purchase boat and yacht insurance.  Read About BoatUS Insurance here.
Boat and Yacht Insurance

Boat and Yacht Insurance

Now that you know why, here’s how.  Choosing your boat and yacht insurance might prove to be challenging but with some persistence and understanding, here is some insight from Protect You Better and Voyager Marine to make the process a little easier.

What does your homeowner’s insurance cover?  Probably not much as far as boat and yacht insurance goes.  The dollar amount is likely minimal while any damage claimed must have occurred when the boat or yacht is at home, not when it’s in use at the lake or fishing at sea.  A homeowner’s policy will generally not cover total loss replacement, fuel spills or personal effects.

What size is your vessel?  A personal watercraft is under 16’; a boat is considered to be between 16-25 feet; a yacht is 26’ and over.  If purchasing yacht insurance, the coverage is initially the same as a boat but the terms used are somewhat different – ‘physical damage’ on a boat is called ‘hull damage’ on a yacht; ‘liability’ coverage for a boat is known as ‘property and indemnity’ (P & I) on a yacht.

What coverage does the policy offer?  Most policies for boat and yacht insurance generally cover physical damage to the vessel on an ‘all-risk’ base which includes fire damage, lightening, theft, wind, and vandalism.  When shopping around for a policy, requested coverage should include that for yourself, passengers, vessel, and liability coverage for possible injuries or damages to other vessels or people.

Boat and yacht insurance is similar to automobile insurance in that most standard policies offer minimal liability coverage with additional coverage in increments of $100,000 up to $50 million; underinsured or uninsured boater coverage can also be purchased.

Supplementary coverage can be purchased for the boat trailer, fishing equipment, and water-skiing.  Be sure to inquire if the personal property coverage includes computers, cell phones, or any other personal electronics that may be onboard; also, is there coverage for on-water towing, fuel spillage, or wreck removal?

How is the cost of your policy determined?  It’s based on the boat’s age, value, horsepower, speed, location of use, and the experience of the vessel operator.  Discounts can often be obtained for operators with approved boating safety courses, for newer vessels, and for having onboard devices installed like a burglar alarm, depth finder, ship-to-shore radio, or even by taking a higher deductible rate.

The National Society of Agents for Consumer Education (NSACE) recommends shopping around for your boat or yacht insurance and looking for an experienced boat and yacht insurance agent who specializes in this area.  A good insurance agent is your best asset to help design the ideal coverage for your boat and yacht insurance needs.

Now that you have your boat insurance – time to hit the open waters!  Use our FREE fuel shopping system to find your preferred marine fuel at the best price.

Go Boat Engine Shopping Armed With These Tips!

Monday, December 21st, 2009
When it’s time to go fishing for a new boat engine, choosing the right engine for your boat may be more important that you think - and using the right marine fuel is equally important .  To make the most of your search when you go boat engine shopping, it may be a good idea to take advantage of the tips offered by Discover Boating.

Discover Boating offers advice on ‘Choosing the Right Engine Package.’  It’s best to do your homework and evaluate options according to the size of engine you require in accordance with your fuel delivery system.

Time to Go Fishing for a new Boat Engine? Read these Tips!

Go Boat Engine Shopping with Online Research

Choosing the proper engine for your boat is important.  If your engine doesn’t generate enough propulsion power, it will continuously provide a weak performance; however, if your engine generates too much power, you could be in danger of exceeding safe speed limits as outlined by the boat manufacturer.

According to Discover Boating, boat engines fall into these five categories:

1)  2-stroke or 4-stroke outboard motor – ranges from 1 to 350 horsepower (HP); designed for use in all water types; provides good fuel economy; runs approximately 1,500 hours before requiring servicing; available brands for purchase include Nissan, Yamaha, Mercury, and Evinrude.

2)  Diesel inboard motor – ranges from 25 to 715 HP; does not produce carbon monoxide gas; inexpensive to run with a life span of approximately 40 years; available brands for purchase include Yanmar, Cummins, Mercruiser, Westerbeke, and Volvo Penta.

3)  Gasoline inboard motor – ranges from 90 to 1,000 HP; quiet with low maintenance required; has minimal running cost; available brands for purchase include Marine Power, Mercury Racing, and Indmar.

4)  Jet Boat & Propulsion engines – water powered with no propeller; not able to steer when power is not applied; cannot be operated in shallow water; available brands for sale include Honda, Yamaha, Mercury, and Mercruiser.

5)  Stern Drive – (also known as inboard/outboard) the engine remains inside the boat while the propulsion drive is located outside; easy to steer in forward or reverse; low maintenance; available brands include Mercruiser, Ilmor, and Volvo Penta.

The appropriate engine for your boat should be determined in part by the size and weight of your boat, which includes fuel capacity, the number of passengers to be carried, along with the weight of any gear stored onboard.  According to Discover Boating, when determining your required horsepower, “a good rule of thumb is to come as close as possible to the maximum horsepower that your boat is rated for.”

The last choice to make before you go find a boat engine involves the fuel delivery systems.  According to Discover Boating, marine fuel systems consist of three types:

1)  Direct Fuel Injection – provides great fuel economy; has low emissions with smooth idling

2)  Electronic Fuel Injection – allows for great fuel economy; low emissions, plus quick throttle response and power

3)  Carbureted Fuel system – low cost, not as good fuel economy as electronic or direct fuel injection; higher emissions

When you go shopping for a new boat engine, evaluating your options for both price and performance may help get your choice a little closer to the net.
