Earthrace Project

Dating back to 2005, the Earthrace was an endurance boat designed by owner Pete Bethune to circumnavigate the world promoting global awareness of renewable fuel and sustainable living.  The 78’ foot vessel featured a wave-piercer hull and was constructed to withstand 50’ waves all in the name of environmental awareness.

Earthrace was a 100% biodiesel vessel and was also 100% carbon neutral.  Bethune’s idea was to promote replenishable fuels like those made with canola oil or soya bean oil; our current world dependence on fossil fuel is expensive, hazardous, and limited in supply.

According to Earthrace, biodiesel fuel offers a number of benefits including:
•    If accidentally spilled, biodiesel with degrade by 95% in just one month
•    Helping to keep jobs local
•    Maintains the same toxicity level as common table salt
•    In comparison with diesel fuel, biodiesel has a higher flashpoint so it’s safer to use overall
•    Is non-hazardous so there are no transportation concerns as with diesel
•    Creates less emissions overall
•    Helps to reduce our foreign oil dependency

The production of biodiesel and biofuel can originate from corn and other vegetable oils (including oil recycled from fast food restaurants) or animal fat known as tallow (from farm animals like cows and chickens); it can also be produced from fish oil, algae, and even seaweed.

Europe has one of the highest production levels of biodiesel fuel in the world; in 2005, they produced close to one billion gallons.  If the production of ethanol (ethyl alcohol or grain alcohol) was undertaken in the U.S., it’s suggested that for every 100 million gallons of fuel created, it would generate approximately 2,000 jobs within the country.

The Earthrace World Tour took place from 2006 to 2009 where the boat traveled to Canada, the U.S., New Zealand, Europe, the Caribbean, and Australia.  The Earthrace vessel attempted to break the around the world speed boat record in 2007 but didn’t accomplish it’s goal until June 2008 when it became a world record holder sanctioned by the Union International Motonautique (UIM).

During the Earthrace World Tour, Bethune took the opportunity to speak at as many schools as possible in order to encourage environmental awareness.  Earthrace also provides resources for teachers including links to free lesson plans from such notables as Xpeditions at National Geographic and the Global, Environmental, and Outdoor Education Council of Canada (GEOEC).

In late 2009, Earthrace teamed up with the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS).  The Earthrace boat was outfitted with additional carbon and Kevlar, was painted all black and was renamed the Ady Gil (after a well-contributing benefactor).

The first mission for the Ady Gil, dubbed the ‘Waltzing Matilda,’ took place in January 2010 when they confronted the Japanese whaling ship, Shonan Maru #2.  A physical confrontation took place which resulted in heavy damage to the Ady Gil which consequently sunk to the bottom of the Antarctic Ocean within a few days time.  Criminal charges were filed again Bethune; a trial followed which resulted in the probation and release of Bethune to his home in New Zealand on July 10, 2010.  The Earthrace Project vows to continue on.

Boat Captain Training Courses in Maryland

Boat Captain Training Courses in Maryland

By Connie Motz, MarineFuel.com

When you’re looking for boat captain training courses in Maryland, a great resource for information is the marine directory website called CharterNet.com.  From their home page, choose schools and lessons, then on the country of your choice, in this case, the United States followed by Maryland, and you’ll be presented with a concise list of businesses and schools that provide boat captain training courses in Maryland.

A list of training providers for approved National Maritime Center (NMC) courses for all states can also be found on the United States Coast Guard (USCG) website which provides a monthly updated PDF file available for download.

But before we look at individual schools, let’s take a look at the general requirements for taking a boat captain training course in Maryland, or any other state.  An applicant must be at least 18 years of age, must provide detailed information on any past/present DUI/DWI alcohol or drug charges, felony arrest record, use of narcotics, and as to whether or not their driver’s license has ever been revoked or suspended.  Additional requirements for training include a physical examination, drug test, a first aid card/CPR certification, and a Social Security card along with photo identification.  You must also be able to prove that you have operated a vessel for one year with at least 3 months of that in the last 3 years.

The most common boat captain training is for a Charterboat Captain’s License officially known as an Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels (OUPV); the OUPV is sometimes referred to as the 6 Pack License or 6 Passenger license which allows a captain to operate a boat of up to 65’ with a gross limitation of 100 tons.  The OUPV training takes seven full days to complete; this can be followed by a two day upgrade to a Masters License which would then allow a captain to carry more than 6 passengers onboard a ship.

With thirty years of USCG licensing experience, 3B’s Captain School in Westminster, MD, provides a traveling school for those wishing to take boat captain training courses.   Advance registration is required; the tuition for the OUPV course is USD $795 which includes a study guide, all materials, charts and the Coast Guard test.  3B’s Captain School also allows unlimited retakes for a one year period.

Charter Captain Courses of Cambridge, MD, offers the 56-hour OUPV course for a fee of USD $900 with a 90% passing success rate.  A 24-hour upgrade course to the Master 100 Tons is also offered for a fee of $300.  The Community College of Baltimore County also offers OUPV boat captain licensing through day or evening instruction at a cost of $769 which include fees and tuition; Master’s upgrade training is also available for $269.

Choose wisely as some captain training schools, may not include additional fees such the Coast Guard fees of $100 for evaluation along with $45 for license issuance.  Once an OUPV license has been obtained, additional boat captain training courses in Maryland are available for commercial assistance towing, auxiliary sail which allows a captain to operate a sailboat with paying passengers, and a 4-hour course to obtain a marine radio operator’s permit.

Boat and Yacht manufacturers

Boat and Yacht manufacturers

Unlike industries for other large ticket items, the list of boat and yacht manufacturers is not just a handful of companies. There are hundreds of boat manufacturers building yachts, power boats, sailboats, houseboats, inflatables and RIBs. The Recreational Boat Building Industry website has listing of  boat and manufacturers of the powered variety. The yacht manufacturer listing page shows over 150 builders with a large proportion of them not in the U.S. The power boat manufacturers listing page has over 500 names in various categories. The range is tremendous, from skiffs to pontoon boats to bass boats to ski boats to cabin cruisers to high performance off-shore racers. Sailboat manufacturers are a category for another day!

There is very little data publicly available for the sales figures for boat manufacturers, especially in yachts and specialty craft. The Boating Industry.com website compiles data on boat ownership and retail boat sales. Their 2009 Retail Boat Market report is out and provides for some interesting reading. For 2008 total boat sales in the U.S. was 705,000 units of all types and 203,000 power boats. Sales have fallen significantly since 2006 when total sales were 912,000 and 292,000 power boats. The report breaks down the top manufacturers by several categories. Here are the categories with the top 3 boat manufacturers in each category and to percentage of the segment controlled by the top 10 manufacturers in the category.

Top 10: 75.3%

Aluminum sterndrive, 16 ft. to 20 ft: 1. Crestliner, 2. Tracker Marine, 3. Alumaweld.
Top 10: 91.0%
Aluminum sterndrive, 20 ft. to 24 ft: 1. Tracker Marine, 2. Bennington, 3. J C Manufacturing.
Top 10: 85.9%

You can see from this limited list how fragmented the boat manufacturing industry is. Hats off to Tracker Marine which manages a top 3 showing in almost every category.

The economic recession that started in late 2007 (remember the fuel price spike in the first half of 2008, seems like years ago!) and continues into late 2009. It is apparent from the boat sales numbers that the recession is having a significant impact on this industry. Although it is not necessarily good news, it would be interesting to find out how many of the 500 plus boat manufacturers referred to above have managed to stay in business and how many have been forced to close shop.

Marine Power Inboard Engine Company Review

Monday, June 21st, 2010

Marine Power, Inc. is headquartered in Ponchatoula, Louisiana and produces a diverse lineup of gas fueled inboard marine engines. The company is also a leader in JetBoat propulsion.

MarinePower started in the 1950’s by producing engines for local shrimping skiffs. The company built it’s reputation in the commercial market by providing reliable engines to meet the demands of commercial fishing in tough environments. In 1984 the company was purchased by new owners whose goal was to expand the Marine Power name into the recreational boating market. The company produces engines for OEM manufacturers in the tow boat and jet boat industries. The company also offers several engine packages for easy and reliable inboard and stern drive repower applications.

The Marine Power engine lineup is based on the well known GM Vortec engines. The engine lineup consists of these models:

  • 2.4L 4-cylinder Vortec with multiport electronic fuel injection (MEFI)
  • 3.0L carburetor fueled 6-cylinder for inboard and stern drive repower
  • 4.3L Vortec V6 with carburetor or fuel injection options in repower packs
  • 5.7L Vortec V8 with MEFI, ski boat, jet boat and repower applications
  • 6.0L Vortec V8, MEFI for ski boat, jet boat and repower
  • 6.2L LS3 high performance V8 for ski and jet boat applications
  • 6.2L LSA supercharged V8, 530 hp. racing and high performance boating
  • 7.4L V8, classic Big Block, pre-Vortec GM engine
  • 8.1L Vortec Big Block V8 for jet boat and repower applications
  • 8.2L 502 cu. in. Chevy V8 for inboard and stern drive repower

Marine Power provides repower packages that allows boat owners to easily retrofit their boats with more modern Vortec engines providing all of the necessary parts for a complete replacement. To enhance the drivability of their engines MarinePower introduced Digital Throttle in 2006 and will be adding Digital Shift in 2010 after two years of testing.

Marine Power made a name for itself in the jet boat industry in the 1990’s.

MarinePower has a 50 year history of providing reliable, high power engines to the commercial fishing industry, then moving into the recreational boating arena providing the same levels of performance. The company continues to work on technical innovations to keep their products at the forefront of the industry.

You’re a boat captain looking for a yacht captain wanted advertisement, but where do you look?  And how do you know if the rate of pay they’re offering is in line with average boat captain pay?  Several websites offer the answer to this type of question so let’s take a look at just what is the average boat captain pay and then we’ll look at finding that yacht captain wanted ad.

PayScale Inc., with headquarters in Seattle, WA, has been providing free salary reports since 2002 based on current compensation data that includes job location, job title, education and skills, plus experience.  According to PayScale, the average boat captain pay within the United States as of September 2009 is as follows:

This will help to put the salary offered in the yacht captain wanted ad into perspective.

Indeed.com is another salary search website that provides the average salary for jobs according to their location.  This search can be a bit more tedious as each city would have to be searched individually.  Using specific city examples, here’s what we’ve found for the average boat captain pay as of October 2009:

  • In St. Petersburg, FL, the average salary is USD $52,000
  • In Los Angeles, CA, the average salary is $58,000

Yacht Barbecue Options

Friday, April 16th, 2010

By Zachary Perry, Marinefuel.com News

Having a yacht barbecue is a great way to enjoy a meal while yachting. You can purchase yacht barbecue equipment designed for marine purposes, or arrange to have a barbecue on your chartered yacht trip. Read on to learn more about the options available for having a yacht BBQ…

If you decide to purchase barbecuing equipment for your vessel, it should be well secured and durable enough to withstand marine conditions. For example, the Springfield 1940049 propane boat BBQ grill is designed for this purpose and costs about $140. Marine oriented charcoal burning barbecues are also available, such as the stainless steel Magma MAGA10014. Be sure to have an alternative ready, for if weather conditions become unfavorable to BBQ.

Some private chartered yacht services and rental yachts offer to provide an on-board BBQ grill for an extra fee (they might also include it in the price). Others will have their staff prepare and barbecue meals for the passengers at additional cost, which provides greater convenience and leaves more time for other activities. This service is usually billed at a per passenger rate.

Either way, barbecues are sure to add to the enjoyment of your yachting adventures. Always remember to obtain the necessary propane or charcoal beforehand; you certainly don’t want to discover that you’re out of fuel for your barbecue after traveling far from the marina.
