By Connie Motz, MarineFuel.com

True to its name, Hatteras Harbor Marina is located at the Outer Banks in Hatteras, NC.  Rich in culture and history, this notable sea shore attracts nature lovers and fishermen alike.  Hatteras Harbor Marina is a protected full-service marina with boating slips to accommodate vessels up to 60’ in length.  Marina amenities include 30 to 100 amp electrical service, water hook-up, laundry and shower facilities, fueling station, and sewage disposal.

Chartering a fishing boat is big business in the Outer Banks area and Hatteras Harbor Marina can arrange for both offshore and inshore charters, plus a service for chartering a small group or for an individual known as the makeup charter.  Full-day offshore charters for tuna, wahoo, dolphin, sailfish, and marlin, start at USD $1,250 (as of 2009; cash price) for a 46’ vessel called the Big Eye; inshore fishing charters start at $700 (same stipulations) for a ½ day onboard the 51’ Bite Me, with a maximum of six passengers.

With “the largest and most experienced” fleet and crew in the area, the option of a signing up for a makeup charter is the most economical (at a cost of $240) if you don’t mind joining others to form a group; in order to accommodate makeup groups, Hatteras Harbor Marina regularly rotates their charter boats with vessels ranging from 38’ to 58’ in length.  The Outer Banks are home to several fishing events including the Annual Hatteras Village Invitational Surf Fishing Tournament, the Hatteras Marlin Club Tournament, and the Cape Hatteras Anglers Club Surf Fishing Tournament.

Hatteras Marina Harbor offers a full-service deli onsite, Harbor Deli, which has a great selection of meats, cheeses, salads, and other delicious homemade items; pre-order a bag lunch to go before spending the day at sea.

If you don’t want to overnight on your boat, Hatteras Marina Harbor also offers fully-furnished apartments for rent with room to accommodate up to five people.  With private balconies overlooking the harbor, these efficiency apartments come complete with a full-size kitchen (including a coffee maker and microwave) plus cable television and central heat/air conditioning.  Hatteras Marina Harbor apartment rentals start at $89 per night for two people.

The Hatteras Harbor Marina is the perfect location from which to start your vacation in North Carolina.  Not to be missed area sites include the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse; Outer Banks History Center; Hatteras Welcome Center/U.S. Weather Bureau Station; Civil War Trail; and the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, to only name a few.  Combine this with uniquely ocean activities like crabbing, collecting shells, and strolling along the beach and you’ve got a North Carolina vacation full of memories sure to last a lifetime.

Yacht Barbecue Options

Friday, April 16th, 2010

By Zachary Perry, Marinefuel.com News

Having a yacht barbecue is a great way to enjoy a meal while yachting. You can purchase yacht barbecue equipment designed for marine purposes, or arrange to have a barbecue on your chartered yacht trip. Read on to learn more about the options available for having a yacht BBQ…

If you decide to purchase barbecuing equipment for your vessel, it should be well secured and durable enough to withstand marine conditions. For example, the Springfield 1940049 propane boat BBQ grill is designed for this purpose and costs about $140. Marine oriented charcoal burning barbecues are also available, such as the stainless steel Magma MAGA10014. Be sure to have an alternative ready, for if weather conditions become unfavorable to BBQ.

Some private chartered yacht services and rental yachts offer to provide an on-board BBQ grill for an extra fee (they might also include it in the price). Others will have their staff prepare and barbecue meals for the passengers at additional cost, which provides greater convenience and leaves more time for other activities. This service is usually billed at a per passenger rate.

Either way, barbecues are sure to add to the enjoyment of your yachting adventures. Always remember to obtain the necessary propane or charcoal beforehand; you certainly don’t want to discover that you’re out of fuel for your barbecue after traveling far from the marina.

Shah of Iran Yacht Mysteries

Friday, February 26th, 2010

Tehran, IranBefore his overthrow by Islamic revolutionaries in the 1979 Iranian Revolution, the Shah was Iran’s all-powerful top leader. The Shah of Iran yacht he once owned is a rather impressive, large vessel with all sorts of luxurious amenities. It was manufactured during the mid-1950s by Blohm & Voss. However, the current whereabouts and condition of the Shah of Iran yacht remain in dispute.

Is this really it?

Is this really it?

A Blohm & Voss yacht appears for sale on escapeartist.com for just under $700,000 dollars and is identified as the Shah of Iran’s former yacht. It is listed in good condition, with four diesel engines and a length of three-hundred feet. The vessel features a theatre, swimming pool, numerous lounges, and over one-hundred rooms. It is located in Austin, Texas. However, another site lists it for sale in California and estimates the value at twenty million dollars.

On the other hand, various blogs, forum messages, and Flickr photos identify an abandoned ship near the New Jersey turnpike as the Shah of Iran yacht. It rests not far from a defunct ferry boat which has been there for many years.   Search for marinas near the New Jersey Turnpike here.

Photos of it show a rusted vessel that does resemble the 1955 Blohm & Voss he owned. Some people claim that there was once a marina in the same location, or that a second owner had left the ship in this area after moving it from the Virgin Islands.

Which story is more likely true, and where is the yacht actually located? Considering that there appear to be no archived news reports on the Shah of Iran’s yacht being abandoned in New Jersey, it seems more likely that the ship either remains for sale or has already been sold. Another possibility is that the Shah of Iran owned multiple yachts but I failed to find reports credible reports to back up any theory… what do you know?
