Marine Tax Refund

marine fuel tax refund

It’s commonly known that when you buy fuel, either automotive or marine, you’re paying a certain percentage of that cost for state tax which includes a designated highway use tax. Recreational boaters are subject to paying these same taxes even though their fuel is intended for marine and not highway use.

In recognition of such, many states are now offering boaters the chance to reclaim any taxes paid by applying for a marine fuel tax refund which reimburses the highway use portion of the fuel cost.

The following states participate in the marine fuel tax refund program by either providing a full or partial refund of any highway state taxes paid (see the Sources section below for links current at the time of this publication):

Alaska
California
Connecticut
Delaware
Massachusetts
Michigan
Missouri
Nebraska
North Carolina
Rhode Island
Texas
Virginia
Washington
Wisconsin
Wyoming

The Federal Highway Administration (FHA) states that nearly four million gallons of fuel were used in 2001 for non-highway purposes with almost one million gallons of this being used for marine purposes. Depending on the individual state, highway use taxes can be as high as .30 cents per gallon which adds up to potential recreational boater rebates of $300,000.

Be sure to take advantage of any marine fuel tax refunds available in your area.
