The Mercury Outboard Engine: An American Legend

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

Founded in Lake Forest, IL, Mercury Marine has been manufacturing the Mercury outboard engine since 1939.  With over 6,200 employees worldwide, Mercury Marine is the foremost manufacturer of leisure marine propulsions engines including the Mercury outboard engine.

Mercury Marine currently manufactures three series of the Mercury outboard engine – Verado, OptiMax, and FourStrokes – ranging from 20-300 HP, all featuring the durability and reliability that a Mercury outboard engine can provide.

The Verado series of Mercury outboard engine offers two standard models: a four-cylinder 150-200 HP and a six-cylinder 225-300 Hp engine.  The Verado is touted as the ‘world’s only supercharged production outboard engine’ featuring advanced technology offering up to 40% more fuel efficiency than competitor models.

Introduced in 2004, the Verado features an improved power train with forged pistons providing strength and durability.  The eccentric-grooved main bearings in the crankshaft help to retain oil while reducing the flow to the crankcase.  The intake cam contour provides improved engine air flow while the calibrated power control module helps to optimize the overall fuel economy.

The OptiMax features four different models of the Mercury outboard engine, from a 1.5 L 75-125 HP to a 3 L 200-225 HP, plus a Pro XS version 115-250 HP engine.  Claimed to be the ‘best deal going,’ the OptiMax series offers top performance and the best fuel economy in its class.

The OptiMax Mercury outboard engine comes with a ‘three-year factory-backed non-declining warranty’ plus a three-year corrosion failure warranty, the only one of its kind offered in the boating industry.  In 2002, the Mercury OptiMax outboard engine series set world speed records in all horsepower categories of Pro Stock bass boats.  The Mercury Marine OptiMax outboard engine was ranked by J.D. Power and Associates as the ‘highest in customer satisfaction with two-stroke outboard engines’ in 2006.

The FourStrokes series of portable and mid-range engines features multiple models ranging from a 2.5 HP for small inflatables and canoes to a 115 HP suited for bay or flats boats.  All FourStrokes Mercury outboard engines feature an inline design for quiet fuel efficient operations plus they won’t smoke.

Several of the FourStrokes engines also feature electronic fuel injection (EFI) which provides precise fuel measuring to the cylinders while monitoring temperature, atmospheric pressure, boat load, and position of the throttle.  EFI helps to ensure a smooth start with trouble free performance.  All Mercury FourStrokes outboard engines come with a 3-year limited corrosion warranty.

Mercury re-manufacturing provides a full line up of ‘Factory Certified Pre-Owned’ outboard engines that are both factory built and factory backed with a full one-year warranty.  All re-manufacturing engines are inspected and tested to ensure compliance with original equipment maker standards.

As a division of Brunswick Corporation in Lake Forrest, IL, the portfolio of Mercury Marine, headquartered in Fond du Lac, WI, includes an array of consumer brands such as Mariner and the Mercury outboard engine line; MerCruiser engines plus inboard packages and sterndrive; Mercury inflatables; Mercury propellers; Quicksilver and Mercury parts and oil; and Mercury Smartcraft electronics.

Marine Engine Manufacturers – Outboard

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

Marine engine manufacturers come in several different categories.

A category that stands apart is outboard engines. Outside of Mercury Marine which has its fingers in all aspects of recreational marine propulsion, the outboard engine manufacturers are a different bunch of companies from those providing inboard engine options. Outboard boat engines have been around 100 years since Ole Evinrude created the first one in 1909. Unlike their inboard cousins, many outboard engines are two-stroke for ease of manufacture and high power to weight ratios. marine engine manufacturersSome manufacturers have switched to 4-stroke for cleaner emissions and jet drive instead of a propeller is also an option. Here is my listing of the current, popular, outboard engine manufacturers:

  1. Evinrude: Evinrude is a subsidiary of Bombardier Recreational Products, home of Sea-Doo, Ski-Doo and other motorized recreational products. The company’s E-Tec lineup of 2-stroke engines include inline models from 25 hp. to 90 hp., V-4 models at 115 and 130 hp., V-6 engines from 150 to 300 hp. and High Output models ranging from 115 to 250 hp.
  2. Honda Marine: Honda introduced the 4-stroke outboard in 1974. Honda has a line of small engines from 2 to 20 hp. Their medium range runs from 25 hp. to 90 hp. and features electronic fuel injection. Honda’s big engines are 4 and 6 cylinder models with power ratings from 115 to 225 hp.
  3. Mercury Marine: Mercury offers both 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines. The Verado line is V-4 and V-6 4-stroke outboards with power from 150 hp. to 300 hp. The FourStrokes line is small and midrange motors from 2.5 hp. up to 115 hp. Optimax is Mercury’s line of two-stroke engines producing power from 75 up to 250 hp.
  4. Suzuki Marine: Suzuki offers a complete line of 4-stroke outboard engines, starting with a 2.5 hp. portable up to a 4 liter displacement V-6 putting out 300 hp. Suzuki seems to be a relative newcomer to the U.S. outboard market, selling boat motors here since 1977,  but they are putting some interesting technology into their engines.
  5. Yamaha Outboards: Yamaha has an extensive (close to mind boggling) lineup of outboard motors offering portables, midrange and high output in both 2-stroke and 4-stroke varieties. At the top of the Yamaha heap is a 5.3L, V-8 outboard that can be had in either 300 hp. or 350 hp.

Today’s outboard engine manufacturers offer a tremendous range of products to fill the needs of more boating uses than I can count. One area I did not cover much here is there offerings of jet propulsion systems. If you needs range from 2 hp. to 350 hp., 2-stroke high power/low weight or clean burning 4-stroke, outboard engines offer a lot of alternatives.
