Boat and Yacht manufacturers

Boat and Yacht manufacturers

Unlike industries for other large ticket items, the list of boat and yacht manufacturers is not just a handful of companies. There are hundreds of boat manufacturers building yachts, power boats, sailboats, houseboats, inflatables and RIBs. The Recreational Boat Building Industry website has listing of  boat and manufacturers of the powered variety. The yacht manufacturer listing page shows over 150 builders with a large proportion of them not in the U.S. The power boat manufacturers listing page has over 500 names in various categories. The range is tremendous, from skiffs to pontoon boats to bass boats to ski boats to cabin cruisers to high performance off-shore racers. Sailboat manufacturers are a category for another day!

There is very little data publicly available for the sales figures for boat manufacturers, especially in yachts and specialty craft. The Boating Industry.com website compiles data on boat ownership and retail boat sales. Their 2009 Retail Boat Market report is out and provides for some interesting reading. For 2008 total boat sales in the U.S. was 705,000 units of all types and 203,000 power boats. Sales have fallen significantly since 2006 when total sales were 912,000 and 292,000 power boats. The report breaks down the top manufacturers by several categories. Here are the categories with the top 3 boat manufacturers in each category and to percentage of the segment controlled by the top 10 manufacturers in the category.

Fiberglass sterndrive, 20 ft. to 24 ft: 1. Sea Ray, 2. Chaparral, 3. Four Winns.
Top 10: 75.3%

Aluminum sterndrive, 16 ft. to 20 ft: 1. Crestliner, 2. Tracker Marine, 3. Alumaweld.
Top 10: 91.0%
Aluminum sterndrive, 20 ft. to 24 ft: 1. Tracker Marine, 2. Bennington, 3. J C Manufacturing.
Top 10: 85.9%

You can see from this limited list how fragmented the boat manufacturing industry is. Hats off to Tracker Marine which manages a top 3 showing in almost every category.

The economic recession that started in late 2007 (remember the fuel price spike in the first half of 2008, seems like years ago!) and continues into late 2009. It is apparent from the boat sales numbers that the recession is having a significant impact on this industry. Although it is not necessarily good news, it would be interesting to find out how many of the 500 plus boat manufacturers referred to above have managed to stay in business and how many have been forced to close shop.

Schooner Yacht Artists

schooner yacht artists

Avid boaters and sailors often want their art to reflect their sailing passion. The beautiful lines of schooner yachts have inspired many artists through the years and a search for schooner yacht paintings and schooner artists can result in the discovery of some amazing pieces. The search for schooner representations can lead down a couple of paths. Where to view examples from historic schooner artists work and where to get an artistic representation of a beautiful schooner to hang on the wall.

Some of the best places to view older, quality yacht focused art is to visit historic yacht clubs. Many of these clubs were formed when the only way the keep records of the yachts were paintings and drawings. For example, the New York City Yacht club has amassed a collection of over 150 paintings and water colors. The works are displayed in the club’s New York clubhouse and the outpost, Harbor Court in Newport, Rhode Island. Some of the more famous marine artists with works in the collection are British artist Barlow Moore, renowned European artist, Italian Chevalier Edoardo de Martino, Americans James Edward Buttersworth and Frederic Schiller Cozzens. Other artists with paintings hanging in the NYYC are Archibald Cary Smith, who was also a shipwright and yacht designer, Elisha Taylor Baker and Conrad Freitag. If you belong to or have an older yacht club in your local area I would not be surprised of you can find some beautiful yacht works hanging on their walls.

If you want to own some art depicting schooner yachts there are a couple of avenues to search. These are options for those who are not serious art collectors, but want a beautiful and stirring piece to hang on the wall. Online site Fine Art America provides a location for artists to sell both original are reprints of their works. The Schooner Paintings page has a selection of art you can buy or contact an artist to see what other schooner art they may have available. 1st-Art-Gallery.com can provide a hand painted copy of just about any piece of art. You can even select the size for your own piece of schooner painting. On the website, famous marine artist James E. Butterworth has five pages (20 paintings per page) of works listed that copies of which can be purchased through the website.

For the sailing enthusiast, the works of current and historic schooner yacht artists can be compelling. If you want to ferret out local example of these works check out the historic yacht clubs. If you are looking for your own piece of schooner yacht art to hang on the den wall, the Internet provides several resources with a wide range of choices and prices.

Captain’s Cove Marinas – Review of Several Marinas sharing this popular Name

This article is a continuation of our series on popular names for marinas. Local marinas tend to be just that, focused locally, but the widespread use of the Internet to find information leads to a little confusion when looking for information on your local marina and find there are a half-dozen spread throughout the country with the same name. Today we are going to visit the various Captains Cove marinas.

Captains Cove Marina on Lake Ray Hubbard is located within driving distance of Dallas, Texas. The marina is a full service facility including covered wet slips, dry storage, fuel, a store  and swimming pool. Lake Ray Hubbard is incorporated into the City of Dallas and provides boating and fishing activities to city residents. Captains Cove Marina is a Certified Clean Texas Marina.

Captains Cove of Henderson Harbor, New York provides a wide range of services to visitors. The resort provides a motel, cottages and boat charters as well as marina services. Henderson Harbor is on the Golden Crescent of Lake Ontario, considered one of the premier fishing destinations on the lake.

Captains Cove Marina of Port St. Joe, Florida is dedicated to helping fishermen discovering Florida’s Forgotten Coast. Located on the Intercoastal Waterway, the marina provides access to the excellent fishing in the Gulf of Mexico and a calm port during stormy weather. The marina provides docking, fuel, repairs and a large amount of indoor rack and outdoor boat storage.

Captains Cove Marina of Quincy, Massachusetts sits on Quincy Bay near Boston. The deep water marina is located in the Town River of Boston Harbor. The marina is full service and provides a large amount of guest dockage for boating visitors to the Boston area. This marina is a nice hub for exploring the museums and sites of local sailing history.

Captains Cove Marina of Delta, British Columbia, Canada is part of a growing, master planned residential community on the Frasier River in the community of Ladner. The marina is nine miles from the open ocean. The marina has 10 docks and can support boats from 28 to 60 ft.

Captains Cove Seaport on Blackrock Harbor in Bridgeport, Connecticut sports a wide range of activities, historical attractions and marina services. The marina has slip space for 350 boats including some transient slips. The Seaport also has charter boats, harbor cruises, restaurant, shopping and entertainment events during the season. There is even a heliport.

I hope I have covered the specific Captains Cove you are looking for or the one that is your local favorite. If I have missed a marina that should be included in this list please send me a note or make a comment and we will insure it is included in the Marinefuel.com database.

Noonsite.com Sailing Information

Noonsite.com Forums

Noonsite.com Forums

Noonsite.com is a popular web site for sailors; it supplies a wide range of useful news and information. Noonsite readers can find data on specific countries, piracy, boating regulations, and much more.

The Noonsite “Countries” page provides profiles of almost every country that isn’t landlocked. These include China, Costa Rica, Dominica, Egypt, Norway, Seychelles, Suriname, and Tokelau, among others. The profiles offer details on boating facilities, navigational hazards, boating-related crime, expenses, seaports, and climate. They make for interesting reading even if you don’t sail internationally.

Noonsite has an entire section on piracy, with piracy news, reports, archives, and links. The site helps sailors arrange yachting convoys to deter piracy and other dangers. Although stories in the major news media suggest that piracy only occurs around Somalia, it also happens in other parts of the world. Their reports show that piracy recently occurred near such countries as Colombia, Brazil, Cape Verde, and Antigua.

Other parts of Noonsite.com include a fairly popular forum and a marine web site directory. The forum covers weather, equipment sales, yacht crew jobs, and other relevant subjects. The directory lists sites on radio communication, rally events, medical issues, and marine weather, among others. It can be found under the “General” link. This directory also lists Noonsite reports on safety, boating gear, environmental issues, and similar marine topics.

Marinefuel.com real-time dock pricesThe Noonsite news section covers more than piracy. It also features news reports on ocean storms, tsunamis, boating laws, navigational hazards, marinas, rallies, and shortwave communications. The site generally adds another news article every 1-2 days. Users can search the news archives and other pages by using the “Search” link at the top of any page.

Yet another part of the web site is the “Routing” section; look under “General” to find it. This area provides tips on routes to take across the ocean and various seas. For example, it tells the user the best route to take from the Bahamas to Bermuda, while taking into account winds and other conditions. It offers the best coverage of routes in the Pacific, Southeast Asia, Red Sea, and Australia.

Noonsite.com is very well designed and offers excellent accessibility, unlike many web sites today. It maintains standard, printer-friendly, and text-only versions of the site. It also provides a convenient free service that lets users request the content of any page via e-mail. Thus data (like country profiles) may be obtained with Internet connections or devices that only support text e-mail.

The site was founded in late 2000 by author Jimmy Cornell. Noonsite is headquartered in Great Britain and operated by the World Cruising Club. In 2009, it received over 651 thousand visitors, an average of nearly eighteen-hundred each day. The “Piracy Reports” are considered the most frequented part of the site. There is some advertising on Noonsite, but relatively little.

Overall, Noonsite.com is a great resource for sailors, yacht captains, and others who travel at sea internationally. Using the information on their web site makes it possible to enjoy a safer and less costly voyage.

Morro Bay State Park Marina

Morro Rock (Near Marina)

Morro Rock (Near Marina)

The Morro Bay State Park Marina is a relatively small establishment in central-western California. It’s located near an estuary and a Heron Preserve. They offer canoe and kayak rentals, as well as kayak tours. Boaters can find a campground and several other attractions nearby.

As of 2006, the Morro Bay State Park Marina had 123 boat slips. There are many small sailboats at the marina. It is managed by Associated Pacific Constructors. The marina is quite popular among boaters in the area. It should not be confused with Morro Bay Marina, a different establishment.

Single and double kayaks may be rented at the State Park Marina’s “Kayak Shack”, as well as canoes for up to four adults. At The Helm Boat Rentals rents eighteen-foot electric boats elsewhere on Morro Bay. All of these boats are quiet, so they don’t disturb the bay’s abundant wildlife.

There is a small restaurant which is part of the marina, called the Bayside Cafe. It sells seafood and locally produced wine. A bench and umbrellas can be seen outside the Cafe, and it has large windows so that customers enjoy a beautiful view. It provides a convenient option for dining after a boating excursion.

california beachCentral Coast Outdoors offers kayak tours in Morro Bay, starting at the State Park Marina. They also operate bicycle and hiking tours in the area. The company has taken many steps to reduce its environmental impact in recent years, and donates to numerous charities and environmental groups.

The State Park also offers an eighteen hole golf course, a Museum of Natural History, and hiking trails. Another nearby attraction is Morro Rock, a State Historic Landmark. Morro Rock is 576 feet (175 meters) tall and stands along the narrow waterway connecting the bay to the Pacific Ocean. Its appearance is quite impressive, especially from the water.

The park’s Museum of Natural History is open 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, as is the gift shop. It provides exhibits, lectures, puppet shows, and other things to do. There is a Chumash (Native American) garden next to the museum. The museum’s telephone number is 805-772-2694.

The Inn at Morrow Bay

The Inn at Morrow Bay

The Inn at Morro Bay is also very near to the marina. It has two restaurants and a spa, where various types of massage are available. Diners can see a view of the bay and Morro Rock while eating dinner or brunch. Weddings may be held in one of three rooms at the Inn.

The city of Morro Bay features a number of inns and hotels, as well as restaurants and many places to shop. There is a yacht club as well. The bay is known for its many types of birds, including some endangered species. The Morro Bay State Park Marina is at 10 State Park Road.

Grand Banks 42
Grand Banks 42
According to the widely respected PowerBoat Guide, the classic Grand Banks 42 is one of the most successful trawlers ever produced. There are several Grand Banks 42 foot yachts for sale in Texas, so let’s take a moment to learn about this timeless ship.

First produced by American Marine in 1965, the Grand Banks 42 featured diesel engines capable of running at a top speed of 20 knots and a comfortable cruising speed of 12 to 13 knots.

42 grand banks yachtsIn its forty years of continuous production until 2005, the company name may have changed but that’s basically all that changed with the exceptions of a wood to fiberglass hull in 1973, and a new stretched hull that started production in 1991.  The Grand Banks 42 yacht had a manufacturing run of over 1,560 hulls in total.

Featuring its handcrafted trademark teak joinery and parquet flooring, this classic was configured with two staterooms at opposite ends of the ship, with a galley and saloon mid ship.  With its inherent beauty, it’s no wonder that Grand Banks owners are typically lifelong sailors with a passion for the sea and the desire to own a vessel that will be used for generations to come.

  1. One of the Grand Banks 42 foot yachts for sale in Texas is a 1972 model listed for $97,350.  Listed by a private owner, it is represented by Fox Yacht Sales of Port Aransas, TX.  This traditional example features a wooden hull, twin 135 HP Lehman engines, Bimini top, radar arch, GPS, and a reported 300 engine hours.

Farr 7500 Trailer Yacht is popular with New Zealand Sailors

Monday, August 31st, 2009

The Farr 7500 is the largest of a series of trailer yachts designed by Bruce Farr starting with the Farr 6000 in 1977. The Farr 7500 model was designed in 1978 and production started in 1979. Follow on boats were the Farr 5000 and  the Farr 740sp. Trailer yachts are small sailboats that meet the definition of a yacht in regards to ballast distribution that can be moved or stored on a trailer. Trailer yachts can be used for yacht racing or cruising. The different models of Farr trailer yacht are popular in Australia and New Zealand. There are several clubs that promote the ownership of these boats.

farr 7500 trailer yachtThe Farr 7500 was built by Sea Nymph Boats of Auckland, New Zealand and Binks Yachts located in Adelaide, Australia. The construction is solid GRP (glass reinforced plastic). The Farr 7500 had an overall length of 7.5 meters (thus the name), a beam of 1.5 meters, keel down draft of 1.8 meters and a displacement of 1,150 kilograms. In 1979 a new, fully equipped Farr 7500 sold for about $20,000 (New Zealand dollars I think) not including a trailer. Seaspray magazine had a nice review of the sailboat. The last Farr 7500 was built in 2005. In it’s day the Farr 7500 was considered to be a pricey, but especially well built and designed, sailboat.

Native New Zealander,  Bruce Farr started designing sailboats in the early 1970’s. During that decade is designs won several world championships in the International Offshore Rules (IOR) classes of sailboat racing. Bruce followed his racing designs with sailboats designed for cruising, including the line of trailer yacht models. These boat designs broadened his popularity among sailing enthusiasts. In 1981, Bruce co-founded what is now Farr Yacht Design located in Annapolis, Maryland. The firm’s designs have won over 40 world championships.

The Farr 7500 remains popular with sailors in New Zealand and Australia with used boats selling in the neighborhood of AU$40,000. An Internet search will find numerous clubs dedicated to to ownership of the different models of Farr trailer yachts in both countries. I did some searching, but was unable to find any report of these popular sailboats reaching America.
