164 foot Iroquois Owner – John W. Henry

Friday, July 9th, 2010

John W. Henry owns the fabulous “Iroquois”, a 164′ yacht which you may catch sight of if you visit the magnificent Boston Harbor Hotel, in Boston, MA.  This mega yacht can cost a pretty penny to fill up, and her Captain rightly takes the business of fueling quite seriously when the occassion to purchase 23,000 gallons of marine fuel arises.

John W Henry

John W Henry

John W. Henry
Henry was born in 1949, the son of farmers. From an early age, he was very proficient at math. His family moved to a desert region of California after John W. Henry developed a serious illness as a teenager. He recovered from the illness, but his father died not long after. Henry operated the farm and became involved in food commodities trading, at which he laterd proved to be quite skilled.   Educated in California, he chose philosphy as his major and toured extensively with rock and roll bands Elysian Fields and Hillary while in college.

He began speculating in commodities full-time in 1981, after developing a highly effective trading formula the previous year.  Henry founded his current business John W. Henry & Company, Inc. in 1982. The firm advises and manages investments in currencies, stock futures, and commodities.

According to its website, the company frequently performs well during times of economic difficulty, such as when Japan had a recession in the ’90s and American stocks plummeted in 1987. The firm’s computer systems monitor massive quantities of economic data from around the world. Its customers include banks, insurers, and major corporations.

Henry’s other main business interest has been sports team franchises. He entered this field in 1989, focusing upon baseball and eventually NASCAR. John W. Henry owned the Florida Marlins for about four years starting in 1999. He became the primary owner of the Boston Red Sox in 2002. Henry helped create the philanthropic Red Sox Foundation soon after buying the team. He later set up his own foundation, which focuses primarily upon charitable efforts in New England (and Florida).

His interest in car racing is not limited to business deals. As ESPN Magazine revealed, John W. Henry regularly enjoys playing computerized racing games. Not one to settle for a joystick or arrow keys, he has a steering wheel, pedals, and shifter set up at his computer. He even co-founded iRacing.com MotorSport Simulations which is a membership based racing site to compete online with other players.

John W. Henry owns an impressive Feadship motor yacht known as the Iroquois. It measures 164 feet (fifty meters) in length, with a steel hull and aluminum superstructure. The yacht was built in 1998 and came from Holland. It boasts two 1,370hp Diesel engines with a maximum speed of sixteen knots. The Iroquois yacht holds nearly seven thousand gallons of water and almost 23,600 gallons of marine fuel. It accommodates eleven crew and ten guests. The yacht cost $34,000,000 dollars.

As a result of his success in two fields of business and important philanthropic efforts, John W. Henry has received several awards and honorary degrees. His story serves to remind us that the ability to merge professional talents with personal interests is quite possibly the true key to success.

Boat and Yacht Manufacturers

Boat and Yacht manufacturers

Boat and Yacht manufacturers

Unlike industries for other large ticket items, the list of boat and yacht manufacturers is not just a handful of companies. There are hundreds of boat manufacturers building yachts, power boats, sailboats, houseboats, inflatables and RIBs. The Recreational Boat Building Industry website has listing of  boat and manufacturers of the powered variety. The yacht manufacturer listing page shows over 150 builders with a large proportion of them not in the U.S. The power boat manufacturers listing page has over 500 names in various categories. The range is tremendous, from skiffs to pontoon boats to bass boats to ski boats to cabin cruisers to high performance off-shore racers. Sailboat manufacturers are a category for another day!

There is very little data publicly available for the sales figures for boat manufacturers, especially in yachts and specialty craft. The Boating Industry.com website compiles data on boat ownership and retail boat sales. Their 2009 Retail Boat Market report is out and provides for some interesting reading. For 2008 total boat sales in the U.S. was 705,000 units of all types and 203,000 power boats. Sales have fallen significantly since 2006 when total sales were 912,000 and 292,000 power boats. The report breaks down the top manufacturers by several categories. Here are the categories with the top 3 boat manufacturers in each category and to percentage of the segment controlled by the top 10 manufacturers in the category.

Top 10: 91.0%
Aluminum sterndrive, 20 ft. to 24 ft: 1. Tracker Marine, 2. Bennington, 3. J C Manufacturing.
Top 10: 85.9%

You can see from this limited list how fragmented the boat manufacturing industry is. Hats off to Tracker Marine which manages a top 3 showing in almost every category.

The economic recession that started in late 2007 (remember the fuel price spike in the first half of 2008, seems like years ago!) and continues into late 2009. It is apparent from the boat sales numbers that the recession is having a significant impact on this industry. Although it is not necessarily good news, it would be interesting to find out how many of the 500 plus boat manufacturers referred to above have managed to stay in business and how many have been forced to close shop.

Yacht Barbecue Options

Friday, April 16th, 2010

By Zachary Perry, Marinefuel.com News

Having a yacht barbecue is a great way to enjoy a meal while yachting. You can purchase yacht barbecue equipment designed for marine purposes, or arrange to have a barbecue on your chartered yacht trip. Read on to learn more about the options available for having a yacht BBQ…

If you decide to purchase barbecuing equipment for your vessel, it should be well secured and durable enough to withstand marine conditions. For example, the Springfield 1940049 propane boat BBQ grill is designed for this purpose and costs about $140. Marine oriented charcoal burning barbecues are also available, such as the stainless steel Magma MAGA10014. Be sure to have an alternative ready, for if weather conditions become unfavorable to BBQ.

Some private chartered yacht services and rental yachts offer to provide an on-board BBQ grill for an extra fee (they might also include it in the price). Others will have their staff prepare and barbecue meals for the passengers at additional cost, which provides greater convenience and leaves more time for other activities. This service is usually billed at a per passenger rate.

Either way, barbecues are sure to add to the enjoyment of your yachting adventures. Always remember to obtain the necessary propane or charcoal beforehand; you certainly don’t want to discover that you’re out of fuel for your barbecue after traveling far from the marina.

JamesList.com Yacht Charter Service

Monday, March 15th, 2010

JamesList.com, among other features, offers an online yacht charter service catalog…

Visitors can view yacht charter prices, locations, and photographs on JamesList.com’s yacht charter service. For example, the “Perini Navi Antara” sailing yacht costs a mere $150 thousand per week. It features a jacuzzi, exercise equipment, satellite Internet access, and a barbecue, among other amenities. At last check, the site had 141 yacht charter service listings. Some show the price, other prices remain available only upon request.

Marinefuel.com Wholesale Fuel Bid DeskClicking on a yacht image reveals detailed information and numerous interior photos. It also shows a list of charter prices in different currencies, including U.S. dollars, Australian dollars, euros, pounds, and rubles. Users may contact the yacht owner through a form on the yacht details page, or by telephone. Some of the listings provide fax numbers as well. Many of the yachts are based in Florida, the Caribbean, or Western Europe.

JamesList.com also has blog posts about individual yachts for sale or charter (and other expensive boats) under its “James Spotting” heading. They tend to focus upon unusual or otherwise unique vessels, such as a tugboat converted into a luxurious yacht, a speedboat that can travel at up to 250 miles per hour, or a 63.5 million euro megayacht named after Red Square. JamesList accompanies each article with fairly large, high-quality photographs.

Jameslist.com Yacht Charter

Jameslist.com Yacht Charter

If you want to add a yacht on JamesList.com’s yacht charter service listings, you must be a broker or dealer. The site charges a monthly fee in exchange for as many approved listings as the seller wants to post. Unlike with eBay and similar sites, there is no extra cost to add more photos to a listing. Potential sellers need to complete the JamesList dealer application to seek the approval required to post yachts and other items on the site. It is relatively short.

JamesList is rather popular, at least among people interested in luxury products and services. Quantcast.com and Alexa.com both give it high popularity rankings; they estimate that more people use it than Lamborghini.com, Oceanfast.com.au, Patek.com, TrinityYachts.com, PacificYachting.com, or YachtingMagazine.com, among other sites. According to JamesList, over two-hundred thousand “potential buyers” around the world visit the site monthly.

If you need to buy fuel for a yacht, the cost is not insignificant. MarineFuel.com’s Fuel Bid Desk service lets yacht operators (and other large fuel buyers) purchase fuel at competitive wholesale prices, often producing an approximate 45 percent savings. The service requires a MarineFuel.com Gold Membership, which is free for the first month and only costs $11.63-13.29 per month. The Fuel Bid Desk Service is available in the U.S. and the Caribbean.

JamesList.com also lists high-end cars, helicopters, jets, and other vehicles for sale or rent. It features a watch sales section as well.

Noonsite.com Sailing Information

Noonsite.com Forums

Noonsite.com Forums

Noonsite.com is a popular web site for sailors; it supplies a wide range of useful news and information. Noonsite readers can find data on specific countries, piracy, boating regulations, and much more.

The Noonsite “Countries” page provides profiles of almost every country that isn’t landlocked. These include China, Costa Rica, Dominica, Egypt, Norway, Seychelles, Suriname, and Tokelau, among others. The profiles offer details on boating facilities, navigational hazards, boating-related crime, expenses, seaports, and climate. They make for interesting reading even if you don’t sail internationally.

Noonsite has an entire section on piracy, with piracy news, reports, archives, and links. The site helps sailors arrange yachting convoys to deter piracy and other dangers. Although stories in the major news media suggest that piracy only occurs around Somalia, it also happens in other parts of the world. Their reports show that piracy recently occurred near such countries as Colombia, Brazil, Cape Verde, and Antigua.

Other parts of Noonsite.com include a fairly popular forum and a marine web site directory. The forum covers weather, equipment sales, yacht crew jobs, and other relevant subjects. The directory lists sites on radio communication, rally events, medical issues, and marine weather, among others. It can be found under the “General” link. This directory also lists Noonsite reports on safety, boating gear, environmental issues, and similar marine topics.

Marinefuel.com real-time dock pricesThe Noonsite news section covers more than piracy. It also features news reports on ocean storms, tsunamis, boating laws, navigational hazards, marinas, rallies, and shortwave communications. The site generally adds another news article every 1-2 days. Users can search the news archives and other pages by using the “Search” link at the top of any page.

Yet another part of the web site is the “Routing” section; look under “General” to find it. This area provides tips on routes to take across the ocean and various seas. For example, it tells the user the best route to take from the Bahamas to Bermuda, while taking into account winds and other conditions. It offers the best coverage of routes in the Pacific, Southeast Asia, Red Sea, and Australia.

Noonsite.com is very well designed and offers excellent accessibility, unlike many web sites today. It maintains standard, printer-friendly, and text-only versions of the site. It also provides a convenient free service that lets users request the content of any page via e-mail. Thus data (like country profiles) may be obtained with Internet connections or devices that only support text e-mail.

The site was founded in late 2000 by author Jimmy Cornell. Noonsite is headquartered in Great Britain and operated by the World Cruising Club. In 2009, it received over 651 thousand visitors, an average of nearly eighteen-hundred each day. The “Piracy Reports” are considered the most frequented part of the site. There is some advertising on Noonsite, but relatively little.

Overall, Noonsite.com is a great resource for sailors, yacht captains, and others who travel at sea internationally. Using the information on their web site makes it possible to enjoy a safer and less costly voyage.

Wayne Huizenga: Amazingly Driven and Successful

Thursday, January 28th, 2010
Floridian in Bar Harbor Maine, 2006

The Floridian

Wayne Huizenga owned a massive aluminum-hulled yacht until recently; the “Floridian” is 69 meters long and features a helicopter landing pad. There is even a decompression chamber! According to a report in the Portland Press Herald, the “Floridian” visited Bar Harbor, Maine in 2006 to have its on-board helicopter serviced. Huizenga bought the Australian-made yacht from pro golfer Greg Norman in 2004.  The yacht was previously named the “Aussie Rules” and is now called the “Nomad” under yet another owner.

Wayne Huizenga: Incredible Businessman & Generous Philanthropist

Wayne Huizenga: Incredible Businessman & Generous Philanthropist

Wayne Huizenga is a highly successful businessman who started (or greatly expanded) several major U.S. companies during the course of his career.   Mr. Huizenga’s path of success is paved with diversity, ingenuity and just plain good sense.

Huizenga began his life in Chicago. His mother and father were also born in Chicago, with ancestry of Dutch origin. He graduated from high school and enrolled in Michigan’s Calvin College.  In 1959, he joined the U.S. Army reserve. He married a year later and again in 1972. Huizenga became a business owner for the first time in 1960, starting him on a path that would lead from small business owner to  billionaire businessman.

Hometown of Wayne Huizenga

Hometown of Wayne Huizenga

One of Huizenga’s first business moves was to purchase a small garbage collection business in Fort Lauderdale. The company later merged with a similar business in Chicago and became known as Waste Management. Through various acquisitions, Waste Management spread across the United States, and eventually worldwide. Wayne Huizenga left the company in 1984.  Waste Management continues to play a major role in waste disposal services and the company’s logo is a common sight throughout the U.S… Mr. Huizenga had created his first household name.

A few years later, Huizenga made an eighteen-million dollar investment in Blockbuster Inc., taking control of the company. It was a small chain at the time, but did have a superior electronic tracking system created by the original owner. Blockbuster rapidly established new video rental stores and began overseas operations by 1990, helped by the gradually lower cost of Video Cassette Recorders. By when the chain was sold to Viacom in 1994, Blockbuster had increased from eight to 3,700 stores.

Wayne Huizenga owned Blockbuster

Wayne Huizenga has run various other businesses, as well; these include Republic Industries (similar to Waste Management), the Extended Stay America hotel chain, and the nationwide AutoNation chain of car dealers. He started Extended Stay America in 1995 and expanded it to almost five-hundred hotels by 2004. AutoNation sold 5,000,000 automobiles in just nine years. Huizenga also owned the Florida Marlins baseball team during the mid- and late-1990s. Even though the Marlins made it to the World Series, Mr. Huizenga decided to sell the Team to John Henry (owner of Boston Red Sox).  His sports investments also include the Florida Panthers hockey team and Miami Dolphins football team. He largely exited the sports business scene in early 2009.

Huizenga has put a strong emphasis on philanthropy, giving over $100,000,000 dollars to charity. He donated $1 million to the Martin Memorial Foundation in Stuart, Florida in 2009. He also helped fund relief efforts after Hurricane Charley in 2004, donated $2 million to the Junior Financial Achievement Center in Coconut Creek, and has contributed to various educational institutions. His philanthropic efforts are mainly focused in the state of Florida.

In recognition of his achievements, the School of Business and Entrepreneurship at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale was named after Huizenga. The story of Wayne Huizenga shows that skills and ability can translate well within a wide range of businesses… for decades, Mr. Huizenga has been setting a very positive example for entrepreneurs everywhere.

There are many pre-owned yachts for sale in Florida right now, with prices ranging from several thousand to millions of dollars. A variety of ways to find yachts for sale in Florida are available:

Yacht Fuel Bid Desk
1. Classified ads sections in newspapers and boating magazines are good places to find a yacht to buy. If there is no picture with an ad, you can use the Internet to see what a particular model looks like.

2. You can search for a yacht in Florida on various yachting websites as well. Such sites include YachtWorld.com (use the Advanced Search for Florida specific results) and YachtTraderOnline.com, which also publishes a magazine that lists boats for sale.

3. The popular classified listing service CraigsList.org is another source of yachts for sale. When searching for a yacht on CraigsList, select the “only search titles” checkbox and search under “boats” for the best results (without “Land Yacht” listings).
