Founded in 1908 in Milwaukee, WI, by inventor Stephen Briggs and investor Harold Stratton, Briggs & Stratton first produced automobiles and then advanced into producing automobile parts.  In 1928, Briggs & Stratton purchased the Evinrude Outboard Motor Company and subsequently sold it within a year.  The company went on to manufacture engines for military and agricultural sectors; in 1953, Briggs & Stratton developed the ‘world’s first lightweight aluminum engine.’
